Course Title: Fish Breeding (Elective)

Credit hours: 3 (2+1)            Full Marks: 75 (Theory: 50 and Practical: 25)

OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of the course, the students will be able to explain the role of hormones in fish breeding and technique of hypophysation, understand the principles and procedures of fish breeding of carps, know the methods of live fish transportation, and operate a fish hatchery.

I. SYLLABUS

Introduction- Definition; Fish breeding hormones; Pituitary gland; Brood fish management; Fish breeding techniques; Natural breeding; artificial breeding of Indian major carps and Chinese carps; Live fish transportation.

  1. Introduction: Definition of Fish Breeding, reproduction, hormone and related terms; Pituitary gland- structure and function, method of extraction and preservation; Hypophysation technique; Fish breeding hormones- Natural and Synthetic hormones, role of hormones in fish breeding         - 6
  2. Brood Fish Management: Brood and Segregation pond and its management (drying, liming and fertilizing); Selection of Brood fish- age, size and sex, Isolation of male and female breeders, Stocking, feeding and care of brood fish         - 6
  3. Fish Breeding Techniques: Natural, Artificial and Semi-artificial breeding methods; Induced (artificial) breeding of Indian major carps and Chinese carps- Inducing agents and doses (PG dose calculation), methods of Injection, spawning, incubation, hatching, egg and fry counting; External factors affecting fish breeding; Water quality management in hatchery; Rearing of larvae upto fingerlings; Stocking to rearing pond           – 12
  4. Live fish transportation: Transportation of fry, fingerlings and brood fish; factors to consider in transportation of live fish; methods of transportation; stocking in pond; drugs used in Live fish transportation.      - 6
