Course Title: Fish Disease (Elective)
Credit hours: 3 (2+1) Full Marks: 75 (Theory: 50 and Practical: 25)
OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to explain common fish diseases, differentiate parasitic and non-parasitic diseases of fish, know different causal organisms affecting fish, and learn different methods of disease treatment of fish.
I. SYLLABUS
Introduction, principles and importance of fish diseases; common fish diseases, causes and etiology, symptoms, species affected and treatment. Common drugs/chemicals and their application.
II. TOPICAL BREAKDOWN FOR THEORY
1. Introduction: Definition of fish diseases, host, parasites, epizootiology, etiology, inflammation and other related terms; Modes of disease transmission; Factors affecting fish health: Genetic and physiological profiles, environment, feed and feeding, injuries and pathogens; Signs of sickness of fish - 5
2. Common fish diseases: causes, symptoms, species affected and treatments
a. Infectious diseases: Bacterial- Ulcer, Dropsy, Eye disease, Fin rot; Fungal diseases- Saprolegniasis, Branchiomycosis, Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS); Protozoan diseases- Ichthyophthiriasis, Trichodinosis, Coastiasis, Whirling disease; Diseases caused by worms- Dactylogyrosis, Gyrodactylosis, Ligulosis; Diseases caused by Crustaceans: Argulosis, Learneasis, Ergasilosis - 13
b. Non-infectious diseases- Asphyxiation, Gas bubble disease, Aflatoxin, Mechanical trauma, Temperature, pH, Nutritional diseases - 5
3. Different methods of treatment: Prophylactic measures: Test and slaughter, Sanitation of aquaculture equipments, Quarantine and restriction of movements; Curative measures: Swabbing, Dip, Bath, Flush, Pond (indefinite) treatment, systemic, Parenteral - 4
4. Common drugs, chemicals and their application: Acetic acid (glacial), Acriflavin, calcium oxide, Chloramphenicol, Copper sulphate, Formaline, Furoxone, Iodine, Methylene blue, Metronidazole, Malachite green, Oxytetracycline, (tetracycline), sodium chloride, Sulfamerazine, Sulfisoxagol, Trichlorfon and Potassium permagnate - 3
