Course Title: Pond Construction and water Quality Management (Elective)
Credit hours: 3 (2+1) Full Marks: 75 (Theory: 50 and Practical: 25)
Objectives: Upon the completion of the course, the students will be enable to select suitable site for fish pond construction to build the pond, prepare and manage the pond in terms of water quality, aquatic weed and predators.
I. SYLLABUS
Fish pond morphometry, site selection, dike construction, inlet, outlet, liming, fertilization, stocking, feed and feeding, water quality management, weed and predator control and harvesting strategies.
II. COURSE OUTLINE
1. Introduction: Fish pond and morphometry (parts of pond), pond types, Economic Size, depth and shape of the pond - 2
2. Pond Construction: Site Selection – Water, Soil, Topography, Others; Survey, Dike- Earth Calculation, Construction, Slope, Crown, Core trench, Inlets and Outlets – Types, design and construction - 7
3. Pre-stocking Management: Pond Preparation and renovation – Removal of Sediment, Drying, Liming- material, rate and application methods, advantage of liming watering, Filling, Fertilization- types, rate, application method - 4
4. Pond stocking: Stocking Strategies and types of fish seed, combination of seeds, time and rate of stocking - 1
5. Post-stocking Management: Feed- types, feeding frequency and method; Water Quality Management–Temperature, Light, Turbidity, Salinity, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Carbondioxide, Alkalinity, Hardness, Phytoplankton and Zooplanktons; Weed Control; Predator Control- Predatory and Weed Fish, Other Vertebrates; Harvesting Strategies; Partial and Complete harvesting, Seining and Draining - 16
