A.    Course Outline

  1. Introduction: Definition of fish, fishery and aquaculture, desirable characters of fish of culture, biology of cultivated indigenous and exotic fish species
  2. Water quality and pond management- temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, plankton, liming and fertilization, feeding, weed and predators
  3. Fish farming system- on the basis of intensity, enclosure, fish species and integration
  4. Fish breeding: sexual differences, management of brood fish, breeding of common carp
  5. Common fish diseases and parasites: Causal organisms, symptoms and control measures of Saprolegniasis, Tail rot/fin rot, White spot, Dactylogyrus, Argulosis, Asphyxiation

B.     Practical

Visit of IAAS fish farm facilities; Identification of cultivated carps of Nepal; Water sampling; Determination of temperature and transparency of water; Determination of DO and pH of water; Study of methods of pond fertilization; Study of methods of feeding; Identification of fish breeding equipments; Identification of brood fish of carps; Collection and preservation of fish pituitary gland; study of use of fishing nets; Study of behavioral signs of diseased fish; Examination of skin and gills; Identification of common drugs and chemicals used in fish health management.
